522 pound Great White Shark
Penny, a young great white shark with a satellite tag and a weight of more than 500 pounds, "pinged" off Ocean City early on Monday.
The great white shark, also known as a white shark, is the most recent OCEARCH-tagged great white to enter the coastal waters of New Jersey this spring during the sharks' yearly migration north. Though the precise location cannot be determined by OCEARCH's global shark tracker, Penny looked to be near Ocean City when her tag communicated at around 6:30 a.m. on Monday.
At 10 feet, 3 inches and 522 pounds, Penny was tagged by scientists on April 23 off the coast of Ocracoke, North Carolina. She has logged 622 miles since then.
In order to gather information on the lifecycle of one of the ocean's top predators, white sharks in the Atlantic Ocean have been tagged by the nonprofit research organization OCEARCH for more than a decade.
Before releasing the sharks into the wild, OCEARCH tags them and collects biological samples from them, including blood and tissue. The organization claims that it makes use of the information to comprehend things like genetics, illnesses in sharks, and the development of medications to cure shark bites.
